When I asked him for a receipt he appeared to be very much annoyed on account of the mails not having, as he said, been brought on board in proper time. I asked him more than once to sign a receipt for the mails, and he said he be damned if he could. I asked him if the mails were all right, he said they were all right. After this, at the request of Mr. Rangel I again asked him for a receipt, which he again refused.
